Lunch & Learn: Classified Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

February 20 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Date: Tuesday, February 20, 2024

Time: 11:30 – 1:30

Location: Parsons, 6210 Guardian Gateway Suite 200, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD 21005

Classified Applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)

Join the AOC Susquehanna Chapter for a lunch and learn on the fundamentals and classified applications of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).  SAR is a type of active data collection where a sensor produces its own energy and then records the amount of that energy reflected back after interacting with the Earth. While optical imagery is similar to interpreting a photograph, SAR data require a different way of thinking in that the signal is instead responsive to surface characteristics like structure and moisture.  What makes this “synthetic” is the fact that the spatial resolution of radar data is directly related to the ratio of the sensor wavelength to the length of the sensor’s antenna.  Find out more about the fundamentals and some current use cases in DoD applications with us on 20 Feb. 2024.

Presenter: Troy Stevens, SRI

Dr. Troy Stevens is a Principal Research Engineer at SRI International. Before joining SRI’s Ann Arbor, Michigan office, Steve was a Lead Research Scientist at General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems in Ypsilanti, Michigan. His research interests span the full synthetic aperture radar (SAR) development chain: prototype sensor development, high-fidelity modeling and simulation of radar systems, propagation and scattering phenomenology, new system concept and CONOPS development, and advanced signal, image and exploitation processing. I focus on developing and advancing TRL 2-4 concepts to TRL 6 to improve, test, and integrate new capabilities into operational baselines for DoD and IC clients. His recent efforts include coherent distributed platforms for multistatic transmit and receive beamforming, small satellite payload design, airborne maritime inverse SAR automatic target recognition and electronic warfare.

Steve has a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan that is periodically useful and a beer brewing hobby that is always useful. He enjoys cross country skiing, hiking and biking in his free time.
